It's been 3 years since Bentley had his FHO's

3 Years have passed since our Bentley had his FHO surgeries! His first FHO was in March of 2012 and his second one in June of 2012. It is now April 2015 and our Bentley...who will turn 5 in November couldn't be happier or better.
He chases Squirrels up and down trees, runs and jumps with no effort. My husband and I are both so glad that we did what we did back then...in order to help Bentley to live a normal cat life...pain free!

Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any concerns or questions!

Best regards

  1. Dear Barbara, I read you entire blog and am happy to hear your kitteh is doing so well after all he had to go through. My own female got a FMO on her right side after falling from a very high tree. Now it is three and a half years later and she has developed arthritis in the "good" leg. The vet wants us to opt for a micro hip replacement, but I am thinking about having a second FMO done as there are no long-term studies regarding the outcome of these operations yet. They only started doing them out here in Germany 18 months ago. It gives me a lot of hope to know your kitteh survived both FMOs and is doing so well. Sending you lots of greetings from Munich, Charlie (sorry, no url or own blog).

    1. Dear Charlie

Es ist so schön zu wissen das Bentley's Blog auch in Deutschland meinem alten Vaterland angekommen ist!
To help with your decision in what you should do with your cat....I can provide you with the following information.
When we were facing Bentley's second surgery, I was very worried and stressed out not knowing how our Bentley would cope with both femoral heads removed. Bentley's orthopedic surgeon reassured us by telling us that she herself had performed a bilateral FHO on her own older cat who was suffering terrible from arthritis in both hip joints. She said that her cat had recovered completely and was now pain free and happy again. And Bentley now 4 years post op is doing great too!
I would definitely run this by your Vet and see what his opinion is. Here in the States this type of surgery is performed quite often to relieve the pain of arthritis in cats and dogs.
Just out of interest, what are the pro's and cones of a micro hip replacement verses an FHO. And what is the difference in cost? Please keep me informed through this Blog.
If a micro hip replacement is another option for some here...then I am sure everyone would love to hear and read about it!

Good luck to you and your kitty and I hope that your kitty will feel better soon!
      Please keep us updated.

Viele liebe Grüße aus Los Angeles

  2. My cat Harley is facing FHO Minor surgery. He is scheduled for January 5 ,2016. Harley was a rescue cat. His age is between 3 and 5 years old. After we adopted him, he gained 3 lbs and started limping on his left leg. I took him to vet and Harley had X-rays and he had been shot. He had three bee bees still in his backside. One in his tail and one in the hip joint and another one too. His pelvis had previously been broken. The doctor put him on a diet and recommended the FHO surgery. The strange part is the fact that it's the right leg that has the problem and he limps on the left leg. I hope I'm doing the right thing here. I've had cats for most of my life ( I'm 67) Harley is the most sweet and loving cat that I've had. He really appreciates his home here. My other 14 year old cat adores him too. ...June

  3. Dear June

I just saw your post and can't believe that somebody shot Harley! I can't believe how cruel some people can be to hurt an innocent animal like that! I hope that whoever has done this will get his punishment soon or later!
I think you are doing the right thing to get Harley out of pain. Our Bentley just turned 5 in November and you can't even tell that he had both hips operated on! Harley is young and he will recover...I am sure of it!
I am so happy for Harley, that he has found a wonderful forever home and somebody that gives him love in the end!
I wish Harley and you all the best to come for a healthy, happy and pain free future.

    Best wishes
    Barbara
